The website of the Ministry of Justice shows types of prisons. There are several points on the map showing prisons in the country. Turkey looks like a country of prisons. Let's look at the prison types. A type prisons, A1, A2 types , A3 closed type, B,C,E type prisons, K1 type, K2 type closed prisons, Private closed type prisons, Special type prisons for 350 inmates, Special type prisons for 500 inmates, F type closed prisons, Open Prisons, Women and juvenile prisons, Juvenile prison, Juvenile reformatories. There are 17 prisons with different names and types. The total number of prisons is 527. Total capacity of those prisons is 72,021. There are 6 F-type prisons and the total capacity of these prisons is 2208. As of July 2002, there are 58,665 convicts and prisoners in Turkey. Number of women prisoners and convicts is 2175. The total number of leftist prisoners and convicts is 5999. The ratio of women convicts and prisoners in total is 4 per cent. Although there is no gender statistics about political convicts and prisoners, the ratio of political women convicts and prisoners may be rgarded as similar or 2 or 3 points above .
Political women convicts and prisoners are detained in prisons other than F types. The total number of deaths in prisons on death fast action reached to 38 up to now. Names of women died at death fast action are Fatma Ersoy, Nergis Gülmez, Sibel Sürücü, Hatice Yürekli, Fatma Hülya Tümgan, Aysun Bozdoğan, Tülay Korkmaz, Lale Çolak, Yeter Güzel, Meryem Altun, Semra Başyiğit, Fatma Bilgin, Melek Birsen Hoşver, Gülnihal Yılmaz. Their number reached to 14.
There were also 7 prisoners' relatives lost their lives at death fast action. 6 of those were women. Their names are Gülsüman Ada Dönmez, Canan Kulaksız, Şenay Hanoğlu, Zehra Kulaksız, Hülya Şimşek, Özlem Durakcan.
There were others continued their death fasts after released from prisons. 10 of those were died. 5 of those were women. Names are Sevgi Erdoğan, Gülay Kavak, Ümüş Şahingöz, Ayşe Baştimur, Zeynep Arıkan Gülbağ.
The number of people lost their lives on death fast actions reached to 55 in total of which 25 were women.
