RESPECT FOR MANDELA

indexNelson Mandela or-as his people call-Madiba, who showed the path of freedom and equality to the peoples in the world, passed away at 95 years old.

The Apartheid regime was in force between 1948 and 1994 in South Africa. The white minority in power institutionalised racial discrimination by means of legislation since 1958.

International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid, which the UN General Assembly adopted on 30 November 1973 and came into force on 18 July 1976, was prepared by taking the regime in South Africa into consideration.

Mandela was the leader of the struggle against racial discrimination in South Africa. Throughout his struggle period Mandela became a person who was considered as inspiring figure for any person against racial discrimination and every form of discrimination in all over the world.

27 years of his life was in prison in South Africa.

Mandela was the chief architect of the peace talks with the administration in South Africa.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Mandela in 1993.

Mandela became the first black President of South Africa in 1994. De Klerk, who was the President in the previous white dominated racial administration and collaborated with Mandela in the peace talks, became the deputy president. De Klerk was leader who understood Mandela’s struggle against apartheid and also respect for Mandela. They were in close collaboration in path to the peace.

Peoples of the world will never forget Mandela.

Mandela showed to the whole world that no system against dignity could be in power forever and as a result idea of peace would win in the long run and free will of peoples should be respected.

The South African experience and Mandela’s wise attitude to peace inspire Turkey to make peace, to a system based on equality, freedom and fraternity of peoples.

Peoples of the world will never forget Mandela.

Human rights defenders in Turkey mourn for Mandela (Madiba) who struggled against institutionalised racial discrimination and any form of discrimination.
