URGENT CALL FOR ACTION: AGAINST THE TORTURE INCIDENT THAT TOOK PLACE IN NORTHERN CYPRUS

Soldier Uğur Kantar had been sentenced to seven days in the “discipline dormitory” known as “disco” during his compulsory military service in Northern Cyprus.  Uğur Kantar went into a coma due to the torture inflicted on him and he was hospitalised to the military hospital GATA in Ankara Province on 25 July 2011.  He is still in come and if he was not tortured he would be discharged on 1 August 2011.

He was not only severely beaten by the guardians of the discipline dormitory for several days but also left under the sun without water with his hands cuffed to the chair he was sitting before going into the coma.

As human rights defenders we know that we are living in a country where impunity still prevails. The perpetrators will not be tried or some scapegoats will be convicted to small sentences in order to smooth down the public opinion. But we can change this culture of impunity.

The Human Rights Association is calling upon the public to take urgent action to fight against torture and impunity.
