İHD-HRFT Joint Statement: We Condemn the Attack in Mersin, Mezitli

We Condemn the Attack in Mersin’s Mezitli District

 27 September 2022

On 26 September 2022, a police officer lost his life and another police officer, and three civilians were wounded (two due to falling from a height after the explosion, one by a bullet) in an armed attack against the Police House in Mezitli district of Mersin at night. The two alleged perpetrators of the attack lost their lives when the explosives they were reportedly carrying in their bags detonated.

We condemn this unacceptable attack perpetrated by using terrorist methods, share the grief of the relatives of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded.

This act of violence committed in the presence of civilians violated the right to life, humanitarian law and many other rights. These incidents, however, should not serve as a justification for the political power’s new restrictions and repressions on fundamental rights and freedoms, polarizing discourse and pro-security policies.

An effective investigation must be launched immediately, and the truth must be uncovered in order to allay all public concerns and, in particular, to put an end to speculation and hate speech in the media.
