We Stand with Women of Iran
28 September 2022
The regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been responsible for massive human rights violations since its establishment.
It goes without saying that the use of religion as an instrument of political rule has led to dire consequences. In Iran, the rights to life and freedom of expression of people of all identities who think differently from the regime, especially women and the LGBTI+, are under great pressure. The authoritarian regime has an extremely patriarchal, militarized structure that uses political Islam as a tool. Recently, a Kurdish woman named Mahsa Amini was tortured to death by the morality police on the grounds that she “did not cover her head properly” and this incident has sparked a revolt against the authoritarian regime in Iran. This righteous uprising is being led by Iranian women, following in the footsteps of Mahsa Amini. As women human rights defenders, we are against all authoritarian, patriarchal, militant and fascist regimes that instrumentalize religion. We, thus, support the democratic uprising of Iranian women with all our being.
We stand with our Iranian sisters.
